Applique Quilt Patterns

Getting Started with Paper-on-Top Appliqué
 1. Trace the pattern pieces onto the dull side of freezer paper. (Use the freezer paper with a shiny coating on one side.) Do not reverse the image.  Freezer paper applique method Picture 1

2. Cut out each piece. Do not leave seam allowances on the paper pieces.

3. Iron the paper pieces onto RIGHT side of the fabric you want for that piece. NOTE: Be sure the shiny side is the side down against the fabric. You will iron on the dull side!!!!!

4. Cut out the piece, leaving a ¼” allowance around each.

5. Using a glue stick, run a line of glue along the seam allowance of the fabric on the WRONG side. If a piece will be overlapped by another piece, do not turn that edge under or put glue on it. Do not remove the freezer paper!

 6. Using the freezer paper to stabilize the design, turn the seam allowance to the back adhering it with the glue. You will be sticking the seam allowance to the wrong side of the fabric on the back of your design. (The white you see in this photo is not the freezer paper, but the wrong side of the fabric!)

7.  Press the seams down with an iron.

8.  Peel off the freezer paper.

9.  Arrange the pieces on the background and pin in place. You can use the glue stick to stick them down, if you want.
